About Mulu

Situated about 100km west of Limbang, Mulu is the largest National Park in Sarawak covering 554 sq km of masjestic rainforest. It is also the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.
 
There are : 60 mamals species, 262 birds (8 species of Hornbill), 23 lizards, 75 frogs and toads, 360 spiders, 276 butterflies, 2400 moths, 72 termites, 5000 beetles.
 
There is no Orang Utan in Mulu. It has mouse deer, Bornean gibbons, long tailed macaque, pig tail macaque, red leaf monkey, hose's leaf monkey and sun bear.
 
Despite the immense diversity of animals in the park, they are not conspicuous in the rainforest. Population densities are generally low and larger animals are shy, many animals are well camouflaged and live in the tree high over head and are active at night.
 
Butterflies can be seen and easily attracted by urinating by the river bank and watch the butterflies coming after a few minutes attracted by the smell and the salt. The only protected butterfly is Rajah Brooke's birdwing. Others are Banded Swallowtail, Common Mormon, Common Bluebottle, Fivebar Swordtail, Malayan Zebra, Dragontail and many more.
 
 
Beetles can easily be seen. It is usually attracted by light at night. Rhinocerous beetle (3 horns) is endermic in Borneo. How many of species of beetles in Borneo ? Alfred Russel Wallace, a self-taught naturalist who described himself as a 'beetle collector' collected 900 species of beetle. Wallace contributed to the theory of evolution during the time of Darwin.
 
 
Birds can be seen on river tour from Limbang river till Mendalam river. Types of birds could be seen are Asian Paradise flycatcher, broadbill, hornbill, wild pigeon, kingfisher and many more. The best time to experience seeing them is in the morning after over night at long house and leaving for Headhunter's trail and Camp 5.
 
Giant pitcher plant can be seen at Mentawai Ranger Post. Types of Nepenthes found at Mentawai are N. Bicalcarata, N.Ampullaria, N. Leptochila and many more. Borneo island has the most species of pitcher plants in the world.
 
 
 
 Tree which is easily recognized is Borneo Strangled tree along the Headhunter's trail. Ipoh tree which is the most poisonous tree in the world can also be found.
 
 
Snakes are racer snake, a family of phyton and the green viper can be found at Mulu.
